Vancouver knitting workshop: Nov.11-13, 2011

Hello knitters,

Just want to let you know the West Coast Knitters Guild has organized a workshop [in Vancouver] with Donna Druchunas, a well known knitting instructor and writer. Various types of classes will be held over 3 days during the long weekend in November ~ Nov.11-13, 2011.

I was not able to attach the information document due to its size (it's only 5 pages, but it bounced the e-mail). I have a copy at my desk and will send it to anyone that's interested. You can also try to access it through the West Coast Knitters Guild website: http://westcoastknitters.org/

To find out more about Donna - here is a link to her website:

There is an early bird registration discount until July 5th.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks, EM

"A heads up that on Facebook there is a new group called UBC Knit @ Night … “A public, relaxed, knitting group that meets after 5:00pm on UBC Campus. Students, employees, Point Grey community members all welcome; please invite your friends! All skill levels welcome, including those who want to learn. Locations and evening times will vary.”

Our first gathering is this Thursday, the 16th, at Bean Around the World Cafe at the Old Barn Community Centre from 5-7 (they close at 7:00).

They serve dinner, beer, treats, and coffee/tea! Come get your stitch-n-bitch on!!! I’ll have some practice yarn and needles for those new to knitting! I’m going to reserve an area, so PM if you are planning to come by Wednesday please.

Address:

The Old Barn Community Centre

Thanks and hope to see some of you there and on the Facebook group!"

If you aren't on Ravelry and are interested in going let me know and I'll PM the poster on your behalf ;-))

New group project: Noro Squared blanket

>Hello all,
We have decided to create a Noro Squared blanket for our fund raising effort for charity. Yarn has been purchased and we have had our first meeting.
Thanks to our sponsor, Library HR. mtc

>For those who missed today's session - It's pretty straightforward, but there are a few things to take note of:

1) The double decreases start one stitch before the centre stitch, i.e., on the first decrease row you will be knitting 34, doing the double decrease and then knitting 34 to the end of the row. Each double decrease row has you knitting or purling the same number of stitches on either side of the decrease.

2) The pattern wants you to slip your stitches together and pass them over together. Even though this is fiddly - the only way to get the desired effect is to do them together as stated. It's easier to try slipping one at a time and then passing them over one at a time, but the results won't be what you want.

3) Row 3 of the pattern has you working the double decrease on the purl side and "slipping 2 stitches together through the back loop as if to purl." Again - fiddly, but necessary to make the effect we want. If you don't know how to do this please check in with Edita, me or anyone you know who was able to attend today. Hopefully we'll be able to make it come clear ;-)

If this pattern winds up being trickier than we think then we can definitely schedule another meeting for next week or the week after at latest. Please let me know if you'd like another meeting soon and I'll send out another meeting wizard to set that up.

Happy knitting! SP

>Thank you knitters for braving the rain to pick up your yarn and to Shawnna for clarifying the instructions in the pattern. We are on our way to create another colourful blanket. I can hardly wait to see the result.

Just a note on needle size: I did my square with 5 mm needles and it is about 20 x 20 cm - the size we are looking for. If you are a tight or loose knitter, try another needle size to get the measurements.

I also found some YouTube videos for the decreases:
